Why do some showers have a left or right drain?

These units are called Remodel Showers or Tub-to-Shower Conversion Units.  These showers are often used when people are removing a bathtub and changing to a shower during a renovation.

Remodel showers with left or right drains are designed to accommodate the existing plumbing and can save both time and money when renovating.

If the plumbing pipes are on the left side of the shower, then a left drain shower pan or base would be installed to connect with those pipes. Similarly, if the plumbing lines are on the right side, a right drain shower would be used.

Having left or right drain options allows builders and homeowners to align the shower drain with the existing plumbing infrastructure, making installation easier and more efficient. It's primarily a matter of practicality and convenience in plumbing installation rather than any functional difference in the shower itself.
