Bruno Stairlift Beeping or Won't Move? Check These First

Quick answer

Start with the simple things. Make sure the power switch (and key, if your lift has one) is on, the seat is turned to the riding position, the armrests and footrest are down, nothing is touching the rail or footrest, and the lift is parked on its charging point. If it still won't run, note what the lift is beeping or showing and call us at 877-392-2531.

Safe checks you can do yourself

Work through these in order. Each one is a common reason a stairlift stops, and none of them needs tools.

  1. Power switch and key. Check that the main power switch on the lift is on. If your lift uses a key, make sure it's in and turned to the on position.
  2. Seat in the riding position. If the seat swivels, turn it back until it locks facing the riding direction. Stairlifts are built not to travel while the seat is turned.
  3. Armrests and footrest down. Lower both armrests and fold the footrest all the way down.
  4. Nothing in the way. Look along the rail and around the footrest and carriage. A shoe, bag, rug edge or pet toy touching a safety sensor will stop the lift. Move it, then try again.
  5. Parked on the charging point. Send the lift to the top or bottom of the stairs so it sits on its charging point. A lift left partway up the stairs isn't charging.
  6. Check the charger. Make sure the charger is plugged into a working outlet. If its light is red, see why the stairlift charger light is red.

If the power was off for a while

Stairlifts run on rechargeable batteries. If the lift was unplugged, the breaker was off, or the lift sat away from its charging point for a long time (for example, while you were away on vacation), the batteries can run down. Restore the power, park the lift on its charging point and give it time to charge before you try again. If it still won't move, call us. The batteries may need to be checked or replaced.

Beeps or a code on the display? Write them down

Your lift may beep or show a code when something isn't right. Please don't guess at what it means. Write down what you hear or see (how many beeps, whether they repeat, and any code on the display) and share it with our team when you call or open a support ticket. It helps us figure out what's going on and what the technician should bring.

Good to know

These checks are for owners and caregivers. Don't take covers off the lift or try to repair it yourself. We're not an emergency service. If anyone is in danger, call 911.

When to call for service

Call us if the lift still won't move after these checks, keeps stopping, makes new noises, feels loose, or keeps beeping. See how to request stairlift service for what to have ready.

Common questions

Why won't my Bruno stairlift move?

The most common reasons are the power switch or key being off, the seat not locked in the riding position, the armrests or footrest up, or something touching the rail or footrest sensors. Check those first, then call us.

Why did my stairlift stop working after vacation?

If the power was off or the lift sat off its charging point for a long time, the batteries may have run down. Restore power, park it on the charging point and let it charge. If it still won't run, call us.

What do the beeps on my Bruno stairlift mean?

Please write down the beeps or display code and share them with our team at 877-392-2531. We'll use that information to help diagnose the issue.
